Start your application today!

The Bar Practice Course (formally known as the BPTC or BVC) is designed to help you secure Pupillage and prepare you for life as a Barrister.

Becoming a Barrister in England and Wales follows a structured, two-stage path.

Step 1: A Qualifying Law Degree

You’ll need one of the following:

  • LLB Law – an undergraduate degree equivalent to a BA or BSc in law.

  • A law conversion course – If you studied a non-law subject, you can take the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) or the MA Law (Conversion).

Step 2: The Bar Practice Course (BPC)

The BPC is the essential postgraduate vocational course that prepares you to practise as a barrister. Passing the BPC is required before moving on to Pupillage—the final stage of training.

What Makes a Great Barrister?

Beyond qualifications, successful Barristers possess a unique mix of skills:

- Advocacy & Communication – The ability to argue clearly and represent others effectively.

- Analytical Thinking – A logical, detail-oriented approach to complex legal problems.

- Resilience & Discipline – Stamina, self-motivation, and calmness under pressure.

- Professional Integrity – A strong ethical foundation and responsible attitude.

- Interpersonal Skills – The ability to work with diverse clients, colleagues, and judges.

To become a Barrister, you must complete the vocational stage:

- Undertake Pupillage, a structured apprenticeship in chambers or another approved legal setting.

- Successfully complete Pupillage to qualify with Right of Audience – the right to represent clients in court.

Your Call to the Bar - After Pupillage, you’ll be called to the Bar and formally recognised as a practising Barrister.
